The Pyramid Scheme
Maya's palms were sweating. Literally sweating. She wiped them on her denim shorts for the third time, staring at the red solo cup pyramid forming on Travis's kitchen counter. Three levels. Four couples. And her, standing alone like the loser emoji.
"Yo Maya, you gonna help us dominate beer pong or just stand there looking like you're solving for X?" Travis called. He was wearing that orange beanie he never took off, even though it was July and hot enough to melt irony.
She shrugged, trying to summon the chill she definitely didn't feel. "Nah, I'm good. Just... observing."
"Observing?" Travis's girlfriend Brynn rolled her eyes so hard Maya almost felt it. "That's code for 'too scared to play.'"
Whatever. She wasn't scared. She was just—her thoughts got interrupted by Jalen's golden retriever, Luna, bounding into the kitchen and knocking into the pyramid. Cups cascaded everywhere, liquid splashing onto Brynn's white converse.
For a second, everyone froze. Then Maya started laughing. Not polite laughter, but actual, real laughter. Brynn looked furious, Travis was trying to save the remaining cups, and Luna stood there tail-wagging like she'd just won Employee of the Month.
"Bro, your dog just ended your party," Maya said, still laughing.
Jalen appeared in the doorway, shaking his head. "Luna, traitor." He locked eyes with Maya and grinned. "Worth it though, right?"
In that moment, Maya realized she'd been building her own pyramid all wrong—stacking what she thought she should do, what she thought people expected, instead of what she actually wanted. So she picked up an unspilled cup from the counter, poured herself some punch, and finally, for the first time all night, exhaled.
"Totally," she said, and something about Jalen's smile made her think the night was finally starting.
