The Pyramid Scheme
Maya's palms were practically dripping onto her new iPhone case, a catastrophe she couldn't stop obsessing over. The screen glowed with seven unread texts from her best friend demanding location updates, but Maya couldn't move.
She was frozen in the doorway of Jason's house, watching the high school social pyramid reorganize itself in real time. The popular crew had claimed the kitchen island like it was their personal throne. Seniors on top, juniors below them, everyone else scattered on the periphery like they were waiting for table scraps.
"You gonna stand there all night or what?"
Maya jumped. It was Leo from her AP Chem class, holding a suspiciously bright red Solo cup.
"I'm just— observing," she managed, clutching her phone like a lifeline.
"The pyramid," Leo nodded, gesturing toward the kitchen. "Ruthless, isn't it?"
She relaxed slightly. "You noticed too?"
"Homeschooled until this year," he said with a half-shrug. "Fresh eyes and all that."
They ended up on the back porch, Maya's phone finally tucked away in her pocket. The night air smelled like cut grass and desperation. Leo grabbed her hand—her palm was still sweaty, embarrassing but whatever—and turned it over like he was examining something fascinating.
"You're gonna have a great life," he said, completely serious.
"You read palms now?"
"No. I just know people who stress-text their friends at parties usually end up okay." He grinned. "Also, you have a tiny star-shaped scar on your thumb. That's gotta mean something."
Maya actually laughed. Inside, the pyramid had shifted. Some seniors had left, juniors moved up, nobody noticed the rearrangement. The hierarchy would always exist. But she was out here, not documenting it for Instagram Stories or worrying about her placement.
Just living it.
"Wanna go back inside and plant ourselves somewhere strategic?" she asked.
"Lead the way."
Her palm was still a little sweaty when they walked back in. But for the first time all night, she didn't care.
