The Pyramid Scheme

Maya yanked the beanie **hat** lower over her frizzy hair, wishing she could disappear into the cafeteria wall. Week three at North Valley High, and she was still officially The New Girl—capital letters, invisible socially, except when someone needed a lab partner.

"Hey!" A voice cut through her thoughts. Riley, the girl with perfect eyeliner and impossible confidence, slid into the seat across from her. "You coming to Jordan's party tonight?"

Maya's brain short-circuited. Riley knew her name?

"I... um..."

"You should!" Riley's eyes lit up. "My cousin's starting this new thing—it's gonna be huge. Like, seriously massive. He calls it 'The Pyramid,' but it's basically this exclusive friend group. Super selective. We're scouting new members."

Pyramid. Maya's stomach did that familiar flip. Last school, she'd climbed that social ladder until she'd reached the top—only to realize her "friends" dropped her the moment she stopped being useful.

"I'll think about it," Maya mumbled.

That afternoon, walking home, she spotted it: a ragged orange **cat** crouched under a hedge, hissing at a passing chihuahua. Something about its defiance—scruffy, outnumbered, but refusing to back down—made her pause.

"Hey, buddy," she whispered, crouching down. The cat watched her, then butted its head against her outstretched hand. Purred like a tiny motor.

"You're not anyone's pet, are you?" Maya smiled. "You're just... you."

The cat followed her three blocks before vanishing into a backyard.

That night, Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. She could wear the right **hat**, say the right things, climb another **pyramid** to the top. Or she could be like that cat—unapologetically herself, consequences be damned.

Her phone buzzed. Riley: Party starts in 20! You coming??

Maya typed: Actually, I'm good. Then deleted it.

Typed: No thanks. I've got other plans.

Hit send.

Outside her window, the orange cat appeared on the fence, tail flicking. Maya cracked the window open. "Hey, independent. Want to hang out?"

The cat jumped onto the sill like it owned the place. Some things, Maya realized, didn't need a hierarchy to be real.
