The Pyramid Scheme

Chloe's older sister Maya dragged her to the reservoir party, the social **pyramid** of Jefferson High already forming before sunset. The popular kids clustered near the bonfire like they owned the shoreline, while everyone else hovered awkwardly at the edges. Chloe stood knee-deep in the **water**, pretending to check her phone. As if anyone had texted her anyway.

"You good?" asked Finn, the quiet skater kid from her history class. He was floating nearby, looking annoyingly chill.

"Just vibing," Chloe lied. "My sister's over there being a total extra."

Finn laughed. "Yeah, she's running that social pyramid like it's a pyramid scheme."

Chloe actually snorted. A real laugh. She felt like a total **spy** infiltrating the cool kid scene, even though she was just standing in chest-deep **water** with a former preschool classmate.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted near the shore. Tyler, the varsity linebacker, was waving something above his head like a trophy. "Who wants to see a REAL **bull**?" he hollered. "My cousin's ranch has this rodeo coming up—"

"That's literally just a picture of a cow, Tyler," someone called out.

"It's a STEER, you uncultured swine."

Chloe and Finn exchanged a look. The silent communication of two people who found everything equally ridiculous.

"Hey," Finn said quietly. "You wanna get out of here? I found this spot upstream. There's, like, actual privacy. And no Tyler."

"Lead the way."

They sneaked away like two **foxes** slipping through a hole in the fence. Upstream, past the parked cars and past the makeshift bonfire, they found a quiet bend in the creek. The **water** was clearer here. They sat on a fallen log, knees bumping, talking about nothing and everything until the stars came out.

"You know," Chloe said, "this is actually better than the party."

"Yeah," Finn smiled. "Way better."

The social **pyramid** felt miles away. In that moment, Chloe didn't feel like a spy or an outsider. She felt like exactly where she was supposed to be.
