The Pyramid Scheme

pyramidbaseballcatorangespy

The cafeteria social pyramid stood as rigid as ever, and I was somewhere near the bottom—probably wedged between the kids who played Yugioh at lunch and the ones who spent every Friday watching Netflix alone. But today, I had baseball practice, which meant permission to leave campus early. That was my ticket out.

I grabbed my orange Gatorade from the vending machine, already mentally rehearsing how I'd walk past the popular table without making eye contact with Maya—the girl who'd sat behind me in English last year and somehow made "can I borrow a pen?" sound like the most important sentence ever spoken.

Then I saw it: Maya's cat, Midnight, tangled in the bushes outside the gym. Not like, wandering around. Tangled. Like, stuck.

I froze. This was it. My chance to play hero. But also—cringe alert—what if she thought I was some weirdo who stalked her cat? What if I was becoming that guy? The guy who knew her cat's name without her ever telling me?

Okay, full disclosure: I might have kind of, accidentally, possibly been a spy last semester. Like, I followed her Instagram. Not in a creepy way. Just... occasional scrolling. At 2 AM. Every night.

I knelt down, trying to look casual. "Hey buddy," I whispered, reaching for the cat. Midnight hissed, then immediately softened when I offered my Gatorade cap—shut up, it was all I had.

"Oh my god, thank you!" Maya's voice made me jump. She was standing there, baseball bag slung over her shoulder, looking like she'd just run from the field. "He's been missing since morning."

"Yeah, no problem," I said, trying to sound chill instead of like my heart was doing backflips. "I was just... heading to practice."

"You're on the team?" Her eyes lit up. "I didn't know you played!"

And just like that, the pyramid didn't feel so rigid anymore. Maybe that's the thing about growing up—you realize nobody actually cares about the hierarchy except the people stuck inside it.

"Wanna walk together?" I asked, my voice doing that stupid crack thing it does when I'm nervous.

Maya grinned. "Only if you promise to teach me that Gatorade cap trick."
