The Pyramid Scheme

The glass pyramid of the corporate headquarters rose from the desert floor like an alien artifact, catching the brutal Nevada sunrise. Elena stood at the base, nursing her third hangover of the week, clutching her final termination notice like some twisted souvenir.

"You look like hell, El."

Marcus. Always there, always with that maddening blend of concern and opportunism. They'd climbed together—from entry-level analysts to corner offices—until the hedge fund collapsed last Thursday. Until the bull market turned bear and swallowed their portfolios whole.

"The pyramid scheme finally caught up with us," she said, watching security guards escort sobbing executives to their cars. "We built it, you know. Layer by calculated layer."

Marcus laughed, bitter smoke. "We were just following orders. Besides, I've got a lead on something new. Crypto startup. Revolutionary."

Elena studied him—really studied him—for the first time in seven years. The same hungry eyes, the same desperate energy. Different bull, same horns.

"I'm done, Marcus."

His face fell. "What do you mean, done? We're partners. Friends."

"Friends?" She remembered the nights he'd taken credit for her work. The confidential information he'd traded for favors. The way he'd positioned himself while others fell like dominoes. "You called me 'friend' right before you shorted our own fund's stock."

"That was just business—"

"No. That was you. That's always been you."

Elena walked away from the glass pyramid, from the wreckage of ambition, from Marcus's increasingly creative excuses. Her phone buzzed—her sister, offering a guest room and a job at her flower shop. Honest work. Real work.

Behind her, the pyramid's glass panels caught fire from the rising sun, blindingly beautiful and completely empty. Some structures were meant to collapse.
