The Pyramid Scheme

Maya's hair had staged a full-blown rebellion overnight. What had been sleek braids yesterday transformed into a gravity-defying explosion of frizz that made her look like she'd stuck a fork in an electrical socket. School picture day. Of course.

She grabbed her older brother's oversized beanie—the one with the ridiculous pompom that flopped around like a confused jellyfish—and yanked it over her head. The hat swallowed her forehead completely. Perfect. Nothing says "I'm totally confident and not hiding a disaster under here" like wearing winter accessories in April.

"Nice hat," called Derek from across the hallway. Because the universe clearly hated her today, Derek was also her partner for the social studies presentation on ancient Egypt's class structure. The one they were presenting third period. The one where they'd built a three-foot model of a pyramid out of sugar cubes and hot glue.

"Thanks," Maya muttered, picking up her pace. The hat was already making her head sweat, creating the exact kind of humidity situation that had caused this morning's hair catastrophe in the first place. It was a vicious cycle.

In second period, she caught Jenna staring at her from across the room. Jenna, who somehow made having naturally perfect waves look effortless, who sat at the top of the freshman social pyramid without even trying. Maya usually hovered somewhere in the middle layers—solid enough to get invited to parties, invisible enough to avoid drama. But today, with her ridiculous hat and impending presentation doom, she felt like she was free-falling toward the bottom.

"Your hat's slipping," Derek whispered as their teacher called their names.

The beaning chose that exact moment to execute a slow, dramatic slide off her head. Time seemed to stretch like taffy as Maya's hair—a magnificent, chaotic crown of frizz that would make any electrocuted cartoon character proud—burst forth in all its glory.

Laughter rippled through the room. Jenna was laughing too, but not meanly. She was actually... smiling?

"Girl, your hair is iconic," Jenna mouthed, giving her a thumbs-up.

Maya's face burned, but something shifted. She yanked the hat completely off and shook her head out. The pyramid stood on their desk, a perfect triangle of sugar cubes, and her hair formed its own wild pyramid above it.

"So," Maya said, her voice surprisingly steady. "The ancient Egyptians built upward, creating something that would last thousands of years. They didn't hide their foundations—they made them the strongest part."

Derek picked up his cue. "And that's kind of what makes structures powerful. Not covering up what's underneath."

The class went silent. Then someone clapped. Then Jenna. Then the whole room.

After class, Maya found her brother's hat in her backpack and almost put it back on. Instead, she tossed it in her locker. Let her hair do its thing. Let it be its own magnificent pyramid.

Besides, she was pretty sure she'd just accidentally started a trend.
