The Pyramid Scheme

Maya's phone buzzed again. Another DM from the popular crowd. She'd been climbing the social pyramid all semester—carefully curated posts, strategic lunch table positioning, the whole grind. Now she was finally getting noticed.

But today, everything was about to crash.

"Blue! Get back here!" Maya chased her brother's chaotic golden retriever through the house, knocking over her carefully arranged influencer setup. The ring light tilted. The tripod crashed.

Her phone vibrated. A text: *Pool party @ Tyler's. 2pm. Bring the vibe.*

This was it. The gateway to the upper pyramid tier. She grabbed her swimsuit—finally purchased after two weeks of online research—and leashed the dog. "You're coming with me. You're... emotional support."

Blue barked, entirely unhelpful.

The Tyler's pool party was everything Maya had obsessively imagined. Perfect bodies glistening in the sun, Spotify playlist curated by someone who actually cared, the whole social ecosystem visible in one place.

She stepped onto the pool deck, Blue beside her. Heads turned. Not the good kind.

"Who brought the... dog?" Tyler raised an eyebrow from his throne at the top of the food chain.

Before Maya could craft the perfect response, Blue spotted something. A butterfly? The reflection off the water? The dog lunged, dragging Maya across the pool deck.

Time slowed. She hit the water with a spectacular splash, fully clothed, phone in pocket.

The world went silent. Then underwater chaos. Blue paddling frantically beside her. Someone laughing. Then everyone laughing.

Maya surfaced, sputtering, phone dripping, dignity obliterated. The social pyramid had just collapsed on top of her.

But then—Tyler was laughing with her, not at her. "That was actually legendary."

Someone helped her out. "You okay?" A girl Maya had been too intimidated to talk to all year.

Blue shook himself off, spraying water everywhere like his own personal glory moment.

"You're soaking," the girl said, smiling.

Maya looked at her ruined phone. Her perfect strategy. The pyramid she'd spent months climbing.

"Yeah," she said, wiping chlorinated water from her eyes. "I think I needed that."

The dog barked, like he understood everything perfectly.

Sometimes you have to fall into the deep end to figure out how to swim.
