The Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at her reflection, phone propped against the mirror displaying a tutorial that had like, three million views. Her cousin's quinceañera was in two hours and her eyeliner was decidedly not serving.

"Okay, the pyramid technique," the influencer chirped. Maya dipped her brush into the gel. "Build from the inner corner outward, like a pyramid of drama."

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up.

r u coming?? - Jasmine

Maya's stomach did that thing it always did when she had to be social around people she didn't know well. Her cousin's friends were older, cooler, definitely not impressed by freshman awkwardness.

She swiped on the liner. Thick. Winged. Definitely not a pyramid. More like a triangle that had seen better days.

"Ugh, this is tragic," she muttered, reaching for the makeup wipe.

But then—wait. She tilted her head. The messy wing actually looked... kind of cool? Kind of sphinx-like? Mysterious and intentional and not trying too hard?

Her little brother Luis burst in without knocking. "Mami says hurry up, she's taking pictures in the—"

He stopped. Stared.

"Damn. You look different."

"Good different or—"

"Like, you're not smiling in that weird nervous way you always do. You look chill."

Maya actually looked at herself. Really looked. The makeup wasn't perfect, but she wasn't either, and somehow that was fine. The sphinx eyes gave her this edge, this I-don't-need-to-impress-you energy that she'd been faking for years.

Grabbing her phone, she snapped a mirror selfie.

omw 🔥 - she typed back.

Later, surrounded by cousin Sofia's friends and their pyramid of red solo cups and loud laughter, Maya caught Jasmine's eye across the room and winked. Not the nervous half-wink she usually did, but a full, comfortable wink.

The sphinx energy was working.
