The Pyramid Scheme
Maya's phone buzzed with the group chat notification: **Costume Party @ Jake's — pyramid scheme theme??**
"Great," she muttered, staring at her reflection. Her fox costume looked more like a roadkill accident than a clever play on words. The ears were lopsided, the tail was dragging, and honestly? She was questioning every life choice that led to this moment.
Her older brother leaned against her doorframe, looking impossibly cool in his vintage leather jacket. "You going as a furry?"
"It's ironic," Maya lied, adjusting the crooked ear. "Like, a commentary on how we're all just pretending to have it together?"
"Sure, Maya. Whatever helps you sleep at night." He tossed her his car keys. "Don't crash my car. And try not to be so awkward around Jake this time."
**Jake.** The name alone made her stomach do that weird fluttery thing. Last week, she'd literally tripped over her own feet while walking past him in the hallway. The social mort still hadn't faded.
The party was already packed when she arrived. Someone had built an actual beer-can pyramid in the kitchen, which was equal parts impressive and depressing. Maya grabbed a soda and immediately felt out of place. Everyone was in their little clusters — the athletes, the theater kids, the popular crowd that sat at the top of the social pyramid like they owned it.
Then she saw Jake.
He was dressed as a sphinx — full gold face paint, Egyptian headdress, the works. It was ridiculous. It was perfect. He was currently holding court in the middle of the room, telling some story that had everyone laughing.
Maya considered hiding in the bathroom for the next three hours.
Instead, she found herself gravitating toward his circle, drawn like a moth to a flame that would definitely burn her.
"...so then I said," Jake was saying, "that's not a riddle, that's just math homework."
Everyone laughed. Maya laughed too, a beat too late, because she hadn't actually been listening.
Jake's gold-painted eyes landed on her. "Maya! Nice fox costume. Very... meta?"
"Thanks," she managed, her voice cracking slightly. "I'm going for 'chaotic energy.'"
"Nailed it." He grinned, and something about the way he looked at her made her wonder if maybe she didn't need to bear the weight of overthinking everything.
"Wanna help me with something?" Jake asked, gesturing toward the beer-can pyramid. "I bet if we work together, we can make it even taller."
Maya felt something shift inside her — not a grand transformation, not a movie moment, but just... permission to exist without overanalyzing every micro-expression.
"Sure," she said, and for the first time all night, her smile actually reached her eyes.
Sometimes the biggest adventures start with the smallest yes.
