The Pyramid Scheme

The spinach leaf clung stubbornly to her incisor, discovered in the reflection of her office window at 3 AM. Elena had been running on caffeine and ambition for three years straight, climbing the corporate pyramid step by agonizing step, and now—now she stood at the top, overlooking the kingdom she'd conquered.

"You're like a fox, Elena," Marcus had told her at the Christmas party, his words slurred with expensive scotch. "Beautiful, but you'll eat anything that moves."

She hadn't denied it. She'd slept with him two weeks later to secure the promotion that should have been Sarah's. Sarah, who brought homemade spinach dip to every office gathering, who smiled too brightly, who Elena found weeping in the bathroom that same night.

The city lights below twinkled like fallen stars, indifferent and cold. Elena picked the spinach from her teeth with her pinky finger, examining it in the fluorescent light. Such a small thing to remind her of everything.

Her phone buzzed. Marcus's name lit up the screen—again. His wife had left him three months ago. He'd been running to her ever since, seeking shelter in the wreckage he'd helped create. She'd been letting him, finding something like redemption in being the one he turned to when the world he'd built collapsed.

Outside, a fox darted across the street, its red coat glowing briefly under a streetlamp. Wild and uninterested in corporate pyramids or moral calculus. Just surviving, just moving forward.

Elena pressed delete on the message, then blocked his number. She threw the spinach leaf into the trash, placed her resignation letter on the desk, and walked out into the night, leaving behind the kingdom she'd conquered but never truly owned.
