The Pyramid Scheme
Maya's phone buzzed with another DM from the high school pyramid scheme—that toxic social hierarchy where varsity jocks sat at the apex and everyone else scrambled somewhere below. She felt like a zombie shuffling through AP Chem, running on three hours of sleep and an iced coffee that had stopped working hours ago.
"You coming to my party tonight?" read the message from Jake, who hovered somewhere in the pyramid's upper middle tier. Maya stared at her reflection—dark circles, messy bun, zero vibes. Another night of pretending to be someone she wasn't? Hard pass.
She grabbed her backpack and headed to her secret spot behind the gym's dumpster, where a calico cat she'd named Galaxy had been showing up for weeks. Galaxy didn't care about promposals or follower counts or who was dating who. Galaxy just wanted tuna pets and chin scratches.
"You again?" A voice made Maya jump. Liam, that quiet kid from her history class, was already there, crouched with a can of tuna.
"You know her?" Maya whispered.
"Galaxy? She's been visiting me since September." Liam's smile was actually kind of cute. "I think she has like six families. We're just her backup plan."
They sat in comfortable silence, feeding the cat while the sun dipped behind the football field. No awkward small talk, no performance, just... being.
"Hey," Liam said suddenly. "My friend's band is playing at The Underground tonight. It's gonna be—you know, actually chill. No pyramid vibes. Just music and people who don't suck."
Maya looked at Galaxy, now curled between them, then at Liam, who somehow didn't feel like another zombie in her exhausted world. "I think I might actually go."
"Cool." He handed her a tuna can. "Save this for Galaxy tomorrow. She's gonna need it after we bail."
Maya smiled, something genuine for the first time all week. Sometimes the best moments happened when you stopped climbing and just sat on the ground instead.
