The Pyramid Scheme

The social pyramid at Northwood High was brutal, and Maya knew exactly where she stood: somewhere near the bottom, wedged between the theater kids and the anime club. Her only real friend, Chloe, had somehow ascended to varsity cheerleader status, leaving Maya behind like last season's trend.

"You coming to Jake's party tonight?" Chloe asked, not really waiting for an answer as she fixed her mascara in the mirror.

"Pass. My dog's been freaking out about the storms."

"Again? Dude, he's literally a golden retriever. Why is he scared of literally everything?"

Maya shrugged. "He's got anxiety. Relatable."

That night, lightning split the sky like something out of a horror movie. The power died first, then the cable cut out halfway through Maya's binge-watch. Perfect. Just perfect. Her phone battery was at 4%, because of course it was.

Then Buster started his whole routine—pacing, whining, basically having a full-on meltdown. Maya found him trembling in the hallway, practically climbing the walls. She sat with him, running her hands through his golden fur until he finally collapsed against her like a giant, anxious pillow.

"It's okay, buddy," she whispered. "The loud scary noise can't hurt you."

Her phone buzzed one last time before dying—a group chat notification from Chloe's squad. Probably some pyramid scheme of drama: who likes who, who said what, who was being fake. Maya used to care about that stuff. She used to want to be at the top of that pyramid, looking down.

But sitting in the dark with her scared dog, listening to the rain hammer against the window, she realized something: nobody actually cares about high school hierarchies once they graduate. This pyramid wasn't built on anything real.

Buster let out this soft snore, and Maya smiled. Sometimes the best friendships are the ones that don't require performing for an audience. Sometimes you just need someone who'll sit with you in the dark when the world gets too loud.
