The Pyramid Scheme

Maya's lungs burned as she kept running, her sneakers slapping against the rubber track. Fifth lap. Just two more to go. Coach Martinez's voice echoed in her head: 'Pain is just weakness leaving the body.' Yeah, right. More like pain was her thighs screaming in protest.

'You got this, Maya!' Ethan called from the bleachers. He was sitting with the popular crowd—The Pyramid. That's what Maya called them. Alexa at the top, then her minions, then the wannabes, then everyone else. A perfect social pyramid that Maya had successfully avoided since freshman year.

Until now.

She'd beaten Alexa's time in the last meet by three seconds. Three stupid seconds that had somehow made her a threat. Now Alexa was suddenly interested in being her 'best friend,' inviting her to parties, acting like they'd been close forever.

Maya slowed to a jog, grabbing her water bottle. Her phone buzzed—Alexa again. 'Movie night at my place. We're ordering pizza. You HAVE to come. It's gonna be lit.'

Ethan walked over, handing her a towel. 'So? You going?' He knew about the Pyramid. He'd been climbing it himself since he made varsity basketball.

'I don't know.' Maya wiped sweat from her forehead. 'Is it weird that I trust her less now that she's being nice?'

'Maybe.' Ethan shrugged. 'Or maybe she actually wants to be friends. You never know.'

That night, Maya found herself at Alexa's house, watching some terrible reality show on a giant cable TV. Alexa kept pausing it to ask Maya about her training, her diet, her race strategy. Something felt off.

Then it clicked. Alexa wasn't interested in friendship. She was mining for information. Looking for weaknesses. The whole thing was a pyramid scheme—Alexa at the top, collecting intel to stay there, recruiting only when it served her purposes.

Maya grabbed her backpack. 'I gotta go.'

'What? But the movie's almost—'

'Yeah.' Maya forced a smile. 'Coach says I need rest for the meet tomorrow. Gotta catch those gains.' She air-gunned at Alexa. 'Later.'

Outside, Ethan was waiting in his car. 'That was fast.'

She slid into the passenger seat. 'The Pyramid's real, and I want no part of it.'

Ethan laughed, starting the engine. 'Good. Because you're faster than any of them anyway.'

Maya smiled. Yeah. She was running her own race now.
