The Pyramid Scheme
Maya stared at her iPhone, the screen illuminating her dark bedroom. 3:47 AM. She felt like a zombie—four hours of sleep would do that to you. Junior year was slowly killing her, one AP class at a time.
At school, the social pyramid loomed over everything. At the top sat the Golden Kids: perfect grades, perfect skin, perfect lives. Maya hovered somewhere in the middle, invisible most days, except when she wasn't.
"You've got something in your teeth," whispered Lucas, the guy she'd been lowkey crushing on for months.
Maya's face burned. She rushed to the bathroom, and yep—tiny piece of spinach, right in front. Classic Maya moment. She wanted to disappear.
"It's not that bad," Lucas appeared in the mirror behind her. "Actually, it's kind of adorable."
Her stomach did that thing. The thing that made her question everything.
"So," Maya met his eyes in the reflection. "You're not gonna tell everyone?"
"Your secret's safe with me." He leaned against the doorframe. "Hey, you coming to Jason's party on Friday? Everyone's doing this zombie makeup thing. It's gonna be sick."
The party. The one where the social pyramid either made you or broke you.
"I don't know," Maya said. "I'm not exactly—"
"Exactly what? Cool enough?" Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Maya, you're like a sphinx. All mysterious and thoughtful, but you've got, like, actual thoughts. That's rare here."
She blinked. "You think I'm mysterious?"
"I think you're different," Lucas said, and the way he looked at her made her believe it. "In a good way. The best way."
Her iPhone buzzed in her pocket—probably her mom asking where she was. But for once, Maya didn't care about being perfect. She didn't care about climbing the pyramid or fitting into someone else's idea of who she should be.
"I'll be at the party," she said, and for the first time in months, she didn't feel like a zombie at all. She felt awake.
Lucas grinned. "Good. I'll save you some spinach dip."
Maya laughed, and it felt like the beginning of something real.
