The Pyramid Scheme

Maya stared at her reflection, finger-combing the new layers she'd cut into her hair. The salon lady said it would give her "edge," whatever that meant. Edge was what Taylor had—the kind of effortless cascade that made boys stumble into lockers when she walked past.

"You look like you're trying too hard," her little brother announced from the doorway, spooning spinach into his mouth with the enthusiasm of someone eating wet cardboard. "Mom says you're obsessing."

Maya rolled her eyes so hard she practically saw her own brain. "Spoken like someone whose social pyramid consists of Fortnite ranks and three friends who think showering is optional."

The truth was, she was spying. Not like, creepy spying—she preferred "strategic observation." Every morning before school, she'd position herself at her bedroom window with binoculars, watching the popular girls' bus stop three houses down. Taylor, Jasmine, Chloe—the pyramid's apex. She'd catalog their outfits, their inside jokes, the way they moved as a single organism.

Her cat, Barnaby, wound around her ankles, demanding breakfast like he owned the place. He was the only one who knew her secret. That, and the Instagram fake account she'd created to follow them without looking like a total loser.

"You're becoming what you hate," her best friend Priya had told her yesterday. "They're not even that interesting. Taylor's followers are all bought. It's a pyramid scheme, Maya. You're buying into a system that doesn't care about you."

But today was different. Today, she'd finally done something about it. The hair. The outfit curated from three different stores' sale racks. The practiced casual laugh.

At school, Taylor actually noticed her. "Love what you did with your hair," she said, and Maya felt something shift—like she'd been waiting for this moment her entire life, and also like she might throw up.

That night, she deleted the fake Instagram. Barnaby purred on her lap as she scrolled through her real feed—Priya's post about their disastrous baking attempt, her brother's spinach-faced selfie, the unfiltered mess of actual life.

The pyramid could keep its apex. She was done climbing.
