The Pyramid Scheme
Maya adjusted her hoodie, melting into the shadows behind the cafeteria's recycling station. Operation Spy On The Populars was officially a go.
"You're actually doing this?" Liam whispered from beside her, barely containing his laughter. "This is peak freshman energy, M."
"Shh!" Maya elbowed him. "I need to know how Chloe gets her hair to look like that. It's not volume spray, Li. I've tried everything."
The social pyramid of Northwood High loomed above them like a literal monument in the cafeteria. At the apex sat Chloe—senior class president, varsity captain, owner of hair that defied physics. Somewhere near the base: Maya and Liam, just two awkward sophomores trying to survive.
"Wait." Liam grabbed her arm. "Is that... is that Chloe crying?"
Maya squinted. Perfect Hair Chloe was indeed crying, and not the pretty, single-tear kind. Ugly crying. Into a container of something that looked disturbingly like homemade slime.
"No freaking way."
"We should go," Liam said. "This feels invasive."
"Yeah, but..." Maya hesitated. Something in Chloe's crumbled expression made her chest hurt. "You ever feel like you're spying on someone else's life and realize they're just as messed up as you?"
Liam considered this. "Deep for someone whose big goal today was hair espionage."
Maya nudged him forward. "Come on."
They approached the table like it was a bomb. Chloe looked up, mascara streaking her perfect face. "If you're here to gawk, get it over with."
"Actually," Maya said, sliding into the seat across from her, "we were here to spy on your hair routine. But now we're here for whatever this is." She gestured to the slime container. "Is that... glitter?"
Chloe let out a wet laugh. "My little sister has leukemia. She wanted to make a 'pyramid of hope' for her hospital room. Out of slime. I was supposed to bring it today, but I dropped it in the parking lot."
The silence stretched. Then Maya shrugged off her backpack. "Okay, change of plans. Operation Pyramid 2.0. We're hitting the craft store after school. Liam's car, my snack stash. You're coming."
Chloe stared. "Why? You don't even know me."
"True," Maya said. "But I know what it's like to feel like you're carrying the weight of the world alone. And I'm pretty sure three people carrying it is better than one."
Liam nodded solemnly. "Also, I make excellent slime. My Instagram says I'm a pro."
Chloe actually smiled. "Okay. But I'm still not telling you my hair secret."
"Deal," Maya said. "But we're definitely friends now. No take-backs."
Some pyramids were meant to be climbed. Others? They were meant to be rebuilt together, glitter and all.
