The Pyramid Scheme

Marcus stood at the bottom of the school's social pyramid, clutching his dad's faded baseball cap like it was a lottery ticket. Today was tryouts, and somehow, someway, he'd decided to fake his way onto the team.

"You sure about this, bro?" asked Jace, adjusting his snapback. "Coach Tyler doesn't play."

"It's just baseball," Marcus lied, though his palms were sweating through the fabric of his lucky hat. "How hard can it be?"

The answer arrived in the form of a fastball that practically whispered past his ear. The team captain, a sophomore named Skylar who ruled the school pyramid like she owned the mortgage, watched him with raised eyebrows. Her oversized team hat sat perfectly on her head.

"New guy," she called out. "You gonna swing or just admire the view?"

The team snickered. Marcus's face burned. But then something weird happened. Instead of walking away, he gripped the bat harder, tilted his dad's baseball hat backward, and swung. Connected. The ball arced toward the school's ancient storage pyramid—a weird architectural feature nobody ever explained.

"Holy crap," someone muttered.

Skylar jogged over, her expression unreadable. "Not terrible for a fraud."

"I'm not—"

"You held the bat wrong, stepped wrong, and you're wearing infielder's gear in the outfield." She adjusted his hat, her fingers brushing his forehead. "But you've got instinct. Show up tomorrow at 7."

The social pyramid hadn't changed. Marcus was still at the bottom. But as he walked away, one hand touching his newly-adjusted hat and the other gripping his backpack like he'd just won the World Series, something felt different.

Maybe pyramids weren't about being at the top. Maybe they were about building something solid, layer by layer, from the ground up.

"Yo Marcus!" Jace called from across the field. "Want to hit the cages later?"

Marcus grinned. "Bet." The pyramid could wait. He had a curveball to figure out.
