The Pyramid Scheme
The corporate retreat was held at a Dubai resort where the pool water shimmered like liquid diamonds under the merciless sun. Elena stood at the edge of the infinity pool, watching the Palm Jumeirah stretch into the Persian Gulf like a fabricated miracle. She was forty-two, and the corporate pyramid scheme she'd spent two decades climbing suddenly felt less like an achievement and more like a prison.
"You're going to burn," said a voice behind her. Julian. The senior VP with the impossible smile, the one everyone warned her about. The office fox, they called him—charming, ruthless, impossible to pin down.
She turned. His skin was already pink. "I was thinking about jumping."
"Then why haven't you?" He moved closer, too close for colleagues. Too close for enemies.
"Because I'm not sure there's enough water below to catch me."
Julian laughed, surprising her. "That's the thing about pyramids, Elena. The view from the top is spectacular, but you spend half your life wondering if the whole structure was built on someone else's bones."
He offered her a slice of papaya from his breakfast plate. Juice stained his fingers. The sweetness burst on her tongue—tropical, forbidden, exactly like this moment.
"Why are you here, Julian? Really?"
"Because tomorrow I'm accepting the London position," he said. "And because I've spent fifteen years being something I'm not. Turns out the fox gets tired of hunting. Sometimes he just wants to be fed." He stepped into the pool with his clothes on. The water soaked his shirt, revealing everything. "Join me."
The decision rippled through her like the water breaking against Julian's chest. She could say no. She could climb back up the corporate pyramid, peel herself another papaya in her air-conditioned suite, and continue becoming the person she no longer recognized.
Instead, she stepped into the water.
