The Pyramid's Sleepy Friend
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. Rain pattered on the roof as she climbed the creaky stairs, her flashlight beam dancing across dusty boxes. Something sparkled in the corner—a small golden pyramid about the size of a shoebox.
Lily lifted the lid, and a puff of glitter swirled around her. Inside sat the strangest toy she'd ever seen: a little figure with bright orange hair sticking straight up like candle flames, wearing tattered clothes and painted greenish-gray. The tag on its shirt read: "ZOMBIE—but friendly."
Grandmother appeared in the doorway. "Ah, you found him! That's Zed. He's not really a zombie, you know. He just LOOKS like one because he never sleeps."
"Never sleeps?" Lily asked, eyes wide.
"He's always awake, watching over children's dreams. Inside that pyramid is a tiny orange that glows when someone has a scary dream. Zed flies out in his pajamas and makes the nightmare go away."
That night, Lily placed the golden pyramid on her nightstand. She dreamed of shadowy monsters, but then a tiny figure with orange hair appeared, holding a glowing orange that lit up the darkness like a little sun. The shadows dissolved into sparkles.
She woke to sunlight streaming through her window. The pyramid's lid was slightly open, and inside, Zed looked exactly as he had before—but now he was wearing a tiny paper party hat.
"Did you..." Lily whispered.
A tiny note beside him read: "Every hero needs a sidekick. Want to be mine?"
Lily grinned. She drew a smiley face on Zed's cheek with her orange marker. From that night on, whenever she heard a creak or a shadow seemed too dark, she'd whisper, "Good job, Zed," and sleep soundly, knowing her orange-haired friend was awake and ready.
Some things aren't what they seem at first glance. Even the scariest-looking creatures might just be heroes in disguise, waiting for someone to see past appearances and discover the magic underneath.
