The Pyramid's Shadow

Sarah climbed the corporate pyramid one rung at a time, her stilettos clicking like a metronome counting down her youth. At thirty-four, she'd finally reached the floor where the windows actually opened, but the air still felt recycled. The office towered above her—a glass pyramid of ambition where everyone climbed over everyone else to reach the apex where the partners sat like pharaohs.

You're up for promotion, Marcus said, leaning against her doorframe with that fox-like grin that never quite reached his eyes. But I should warn you—Jennifer's been gunning for your spot.

Sarah nodded, throat tight. She knew Jennifer's type—young, hungry, willing to sacrifice authenticity for advancement. Just like Marcus had once been. Just like Sarah, if she were honest with herself.

The promotion announcement came during a storm. Lightning fractured the sky outside as the partners applauded Sarah's ascension. She should have felt triumphant. Instead, she watched Jennifer's carefully composed face crack, saw the tears brimming, and felt sick.

That night, Sarah sat at her kitchen counter with a glass of water, watching rain streak her window like tears. She'd won. She'd finally made it. But the pyramid's shadow stretched longer now, darker.

Her phone buzzed—Marcus, congratulating her. Another fox at the door, another cycle beginning. Sarah realized she wasn't climbing anymore. She was just pushing others down.

She drank the water, cold and clean, and for the first time in years, considered what it might mean to step off the pyramid entirely. To stop climbing. To just be.
