The Pyramid's Shadow

The orange sunset bled across the LA skyline, casting long shadows from the glass pyramid that housed Apex Media's headquarters. Elena pressed her palm against the cold window, feeling the day's exhaustion settle into her bones.

"You're going to burn yourself out," Marcus said from behind her. His voice carried that familiar mix of concern and calculation that had kept her awake for three months.

She turned to face him. He'd aged since the merger—gray threading his temples, lines around eyes that still watched her like a fox assessing prey. Or maybe she was the predator now. The dynamics blurred after so many late nights and crossed lines.

"The board meeting tomorrow," she said. "Phillips expects my resignation."

"Let him expect it." Marcus stepped closer, his citrus cologne mixing with the metallic tang of corporate air. "You built this division from nothing. That pyramid scheme they call organizational hierarchy? It needs people like us at the base, not the top."

She smiled despite herself. "Always the revolutionary."

"Always the one who knows when to fold." His thumb traced her jawline, a gesture that had become devastatingly intimate. "My offer stands. San Francisco. New venture. No pyramids to climb."

Outside, the last orange light slipped behind the horizon. In the reflection, she saw what Phillips would see tomorrow: a woman palm-flat against glass, staring at a kingdom she'd built but never truly owned.

"What if I like the climb?" she whispered.

Marcus's hand dropped. "Then you'll die reaching for a top that doesn't exist."

She turned back to the window. His palm print remained on the glass, a ghostly outline already fading. Some structures were meant to be climbed alone. Others weren't meant to be climbed at all.
