The Pyramid's Shadow
Elena passed the lobby aquarium each morning, watching the goldfish glide through their confined water world, oblivious to the glass walls that defined their existence. She'd become like them — swimming circles in the pyramid-shaped office tower, unaware she was being watched.
Then came the evening she found the orange sticky note on her desk: "They know what you found."
James from Risk Management had been spying on her for weeks. She'd noticed his gaze across the cafeteria, the way his presence seemed to materialize whenever she opened certain files. The corporate pyramid maintained its structure through silence, and someone had decided she'd become too loud.
"You're not the only one who's been looking," James said, cornering her by the water cooler that Tuesday. "The embezzlement goes to the top. The pyramid's about to collapse."
His fingers brushed hers when he handed her the drive. For a moment, she thought she saw something real behind those surveillance-trained eyes — fear, perhaps, or the desperate hope of someone who'd been in the water too long.
"Why me?"
"Because you're the only one who's still swimming against the current."
She chose the hard truth. By dawn, the goldfish were still circling their glass prison, but Elena had finally broken through hers. The pyramid would fall, and somewhere in the wreckage, she and James might discover what was real beneath all the watching.
