The Pyramid's Shadow
Elena's Padel racquet cut through the humid evening air, the ball crackling against the glass wall of the court. Across the net, Marcus laughed—a sound she'd once found charming, before she learned who he really was.
"You're distracted," he called, wiping sweat from his brow. "Bad week at the office?"
Elena forced a smile. "You could say that." What she couldn't say: your company's entire executive board is under investigation, and I'm the reason why.
She'd been recruited by corporate intelligence eight months ago. Her mission: infiltrate Apex Holdings as a financial analyst and gather evidence on the pyramid scheme hiding beneath their legitimate venture capital arm. The scheme had ruined thousands—siphoned retirement funds, drained college savings, leftç ´äş§ in its wake. Marcus was merely a casualty in the larger game, a mid-level director who probably believed in the company's mission.
Probably.
"Game point," he said, serving. The ball sailed toward her backhand corner.
Elena hesitated. In that moment, the padel court became a confessional. She could walk away, file her report, and watch Marcus's life crumble when the indictment dropped. Or she could warn him—give him a chance to distance himself before the hammer fell.
She missed the ball. It bounced twice, untouched.
"Elena?" Marcus's playful expression softened. "You okay?"
She walked to the net, suddenly exhausted. The pyramid of secrets she'd built—her cover story, her manufactured friendship, every calculated conversation—felt crushingly heavy. Spycraft was supposed to be glamorous. Instead, it was just lonely.
"Marcus," she said, her voice barely audible above the hum of the court lights. "I need to tell you something."
His face changed. Something flickered behind his eyes—recognition, or perhaps fear. "You know," he said quietly.
Elena froze. "I know what?"
"About the pyramid scheme." Marcus leaned on his racquet, studying her with unsettling calm. "We've had someone from Corporate Intelligence on our radar for months. We just didn't know which analyst."
The padel court suddenly felt enormous. "Marcus—"
"I'm not a victim, Elena." He stepped closer. "I'm your handler."
