The Pyramid's Secret Pal

Maya pressed her palm against the smooth stone pyramid in her grandmother's garden. It was just a miniature sculpture, no bigger than a dollhouse, but Grandma swore it held magic.

"Every pyramid has secrets," Grandma would say with a twinkly smile. "You just need to listen."

Maya listened. And on the warmest summer afternoon, with golden sunlight streaming through the oak leaves, she heard something—a tiny snore.

She knelt down and peeked behind the pyramid. There, curled in the shadow of the stone, was a little brown bear no bigger than a mango. He wore a tiny red cape and dreamed with twitching paws.

"Hello?" Maya whispered.

The bear's eyes popped open. They were the color of honey. "Oh! A human!" He scrambled up, dusting off his fur. "I'm Barnaby. I was running from the Stone Giants and—oh no, they're still after me!"

Maya looked around. Just garden gnomes and daisies. "I don't see any giants."

"That's because they're hiding!" Barnaby grabbed her pinky finger with his tiny paw. "Please help!"

Something fluttered in Maya's chest—the feeling of an adventure beginning. "Where do we need to go?"

"To the Cloud Pyramid!" Barnaby pointed at the sky. "It's where the brave ones go. But first, we must run!"

Maya giggled. She wasn't very fast, but with a friend depending on her, she felt sudden courage. She cupped Barnaby in her hands and took off running across the garden, past the rosebushes and the swing set, until she reached the old oak tree.

"Up there!" Barnaby cheered. "The Cloud Pyramid appears at the top!"

Maya climbed. Her arms tired. Her knees scraped. But Barnaby told stories of cookies and constellations the whole way up.

When they reached the highest branch, Maya gasped. Through the leaves, she saw it—clouds shaped exactly like pyramids, floating in a sea of blue.

"We made it!" Barnaby danced on her shoulder. "The Stone Giants can't catch us here!"

Maya looked at her garden below. It looked small but wonderful. "Do you have to go now?"

"Only when you want me to." Barnaby patted her cheek. "That's the secret of the pyramid, Maya. Magic isn't about running away. It's about finding friends who run WITH you."

Maya held Barnaby close as they watched the cloud pyramids drift by in the golden sunset, and she knew that Grandma was right—some secrets are worth discovering, especially the ones that fit right in the palm of your hand.
