The Pyramid's Eighth Inning

Elena had been working as a corporate spy for six years, long enough to know that corporate espionage was less about martini drinks and more about stolen passwords. Her current target: Apex Wellness, a multi-level marketing scheme bilking retirees out of their savings.

The pyramid scheme operated out of a glass tower in Austin, its CEO—Marcus, who smiled with only his top teeth—had been clever enough to make the paperwork look legitimate. Elena's job was to find the smoking gun.

She'd embedded herself as an executive assistant three weeks ago, spending her days photocopying documents while hunting for real financial records. The office culture was relentless positivity, "GRIND" spelled out in vinyl letters on the wall.

What she hadn't expected was Charlie.

Charlie worked in accounting, quiet, with dirt under his fingernails and a faded baseball cap on his desk. The cap was from the 1996 Astros, worn soft as fabric.

"You play?" she'd asked during one of those endless team-building lunches.

"Used to," he'd said. "College scholarship. Blew out my shoulder."

They'd started taking lunch breaks together, sitting on the bench outside where he'd throw a tennis ball against the brick wall—catch, throw, catch. Elena found herself looking forward to those twenty minutes, the way Charlie would talk about pitching mechanics and curveballs, his face lighting up.

"You're too good for this place," he said one Tuesday.

"You think?" She caught the ball one-handed.

"I see how you look at Marcus's spreadsheets." He squinted against the sun. "You're looking for something else."

Elena's heart stalled. "What makes you say that?"

"Because I'm looking too." Charlie dropped his voice. "My mother lost everything to people like him. I've been gathering evidence."

The pyramid scheme was already crumbling—Elena could see it in the desperate recruitment calls. But Charlie? Charlie was the real surprise.

"Partner up?" she asked, tossing the ball back.

He caught it, and for the first time, he really smiled. "Partner up."

They found the files together that Friday, Marcus's offshore accounts and falsified balance sheets, everything needed to bring the whole pyramid down. The FBI came on Monday.

Elena never got her full bonus—her handler was pissed about the unauthorized partner—but she did get Charlie's number. And somewhere along the line, she'd learned that sometimes the best intel comes not from spying alone, but from knowing when to let someone else on your team.
