The Pyramid's Edge

The corporate pyramid loomed over everything, even here at the Tamarind Resort's infinity pool. Elena traced the condensation on her glass of sauvignon blanc, watching the sunset bleed across the water's surface. Three years climbing those hierarchies, and she'd reached the layer where the air grew thin, the view magnificent but vertiginous.

"You're brooding again," Marcus said, sliding onto the chaise beside hers. His linen shirt was unbuttoned one button too many, calculated carelessness.

"I'm reflecting," she corrected. "There's a difference."

He laughed, the sound warm and practiced. "We're supposed to be celebrating. The merger. The bonus structure. Remember?"

How could she forget? The bonus pool that had materialized like manna, distribution rights determined by the same pyramid that demanded everyone sacrifice something upward. Her marriage. Her sleep. The version of herself who'd once believed meritocracy wasn't just a story told to keep worker bees docile.

Across the pool, two junior analysts played padel with desperate enthusiasm, their racquets cutting through humid air. So young, so convinced that performance equaled advancement. Elena remembered that certainty. Before she'd learned the real game wasn't about skill but about knowing whose tournament you'd entered.

"Your father called," Marcus added, almost casual. "Asked if we'd considered his offer. The baseball team ownership group."

The knot in her stomach tightened. Her father's empire—another pyramid, this one built on manufacturing and old money. His offer: marry Marcus, consolidate influence, secure her position. The merger wasn't just corporate. It was dynastic.

"And what did you tell him?" she asked Marcus.

"That we'd discuss it after the retreat. After the bonus structure announcement tomorrow." His hand found her thigh beneath the water, proprietary. "We're building something here, El. Together."

They were building something. She saw that now. The question was whether she wanted to inhabit it or burn it down and start over.

The padel players laughed, breathless and oblivious. Elena set down her wine, stood, and walked toward the pool's edge where the water spilled endlessly into nothing. The pyramid would always demand more. But for tonight, under this dying sun, she still had choices left to make.
