The Pyramid's Edge

The corporate retreat brochure had promised 'clarity through reflection.' Instead, Maria stood at the edge of the infinity pool, nursing her third gin and tonic, watching the desert sunset bleed into the Nevada mountains. Behind her, the pyramid-shaped hotel rose like a monument to excess—just like the corporate structure she'd spent twenty years climbing.

"You're missing the keynote," a voice said.

She turned. David, the new VP from Chicago, stood too close. His eyes lingered on her cocktail.

"I've heard Richard speak about 'synergy' enough times to last a lifetime."

David laughed, a sharp sound. "Nobody actually believes that shit. We're all just waiting for our bonuses."

He dipped his fingers in the pool, sending ripples across the glassy surface. In the distance, lightning cracked the sky—a sudden, violent fork that illuminated the hotel's golden facade. Something about the way he watched her made her skin prickle.

"I heard about your divorce," he said quietly. "And your daughter's tuition situation."

Maria's grip tightened on her glass. The implication hung between them like smoke.

"There's a position opening in Singapore," David continued. "Six figures, relocation package. But Richard's already promised it to his nephew. Unless..."

He trailed off. The unspoken offer settled over her, heavy and suffocating. She looked at the pool's black water, then at David's expectant face, then at the pyramid hotel glowing against the storm-darkened sky.

Another lightning strike. This one closer.

"I quit," she said.

David blinked. "What?"

"I'm not doing this anymore. Not with you, not with Richard, not with any of it."

She set her glass on a table, turned, and walked back toward the hotel, leaving him standing alone by the pool as the first heavy drops began to fall.
