The Pyramid Party Crash

Maya's palms were practically sweating through her phone case as she stared at the notification. Tyler, the senior who'd somehow transformed from random quiet kid to the top of the social pyramid overnight, had invited her to his party.

"No way," said Jayden, barely looking up from their Switch. "Tyler's parties are legendary. Last time someone tried to climb his actual backyard pyramid, they fell through three layers of inflatable pool toys."

Maya groaned. "That's not helpful."

"What's not helpful is you standing there like a bull in a china shop, overthinking everything." Jayden finally paused their game. "Look, everyone's going. Even Harper—that fox who started the rumor that Mr. Harrison lives in the school basement."

The party scene was exactly what Maya expected: too loud, too many people trying too hard, and the air thick with cheap cologne and desperation. Tyler's pyramid wasn't just pool toys anymore—it was some weird art installation made of stacked speakers and neon lights.

She lasted twelve minutes before ducking into the kitchen, where she found someone sitting on the counter, eating string cheese and looking equally miserable.

"Hiding from the pyramid?" The girl—Harper, actually—held out a cheese stick. "I'm Harper. The fox, apparently."

"Maya." She took it. "How'd you get that nickname anyway?"

Harper rolled her eyes. "Started as some weird thing about me being 'sly' because I figured out the cafeteria served breakfast pizza on Fridays before anyone else. Then it spiraled."

They sat there analyzing the party dynamics like researchers observing a bizarre experiment. The bull of the group—some sophomore named Connor who kept shouting and accidentally knocking into people—kept disrupting Tyler's carefully curated social hierarchy.

"You know," Harper said, "Tyler's pyramid only works if everyone buys into it. Watch this." She slid off the counter, grabbed a slice of pizza from the platter meant for Tyler's inner circle, and started eating it right in the middle of the room.

The gasps were audible.

Maya's phone buzzed. Jayden: Did you just become part of a pyramid scheme??

She laughed and joined Harper. "Next time," she said, "we skip the pyramid entirely."

"Deal," Harper grinned. "My house. No pyramids, no bull, just us and way better snacks."

Sometimes the best social climbs were the ones you didn't make at all.
