The Pyramid on the Plate
The spinach sat on Marcus's plate, wilted and congealing, much like his marriage. Another dinner party with Elena's colleagues—more performances, more masks.
"I'm telling you, it's a pyramid," Thomas said, gesturing with his wine glass. "The whole crypto thing. Classic structure, new technology."
Marcus's wife laughed, bright and practiced. "Oh Tom, you're so bearish on everything. Some people made millions."
*Some people*, Marcus thought. The ones who got out. The ones who didn't lose their children's college fund to optimism.
"I'm not bearish," Thomas countered, his voice rising. "I'm realistic. You can't be bullish forever without a correction."
Across the table, Sarah—Thomas's wife—studied her own spinach with intense fascination. She knew. They all knew about Thomas's "correction" last year. The gambling losses disguised as day trading. The way she'd stopped wearing her grandmother's earrings.
Marcus felt suddenly tender toward her. They were both married to gamblers in different forms—his wife with her relentless pursuit of promotion at any cost, Thomas with his desperate schemes to recapture lost status.
"The problem," Marcus found himself saying, "is that at the bottom of every pyramid, someone has to hold up everyone else's weight."
Silence. Elena shot him a warning look. But something in Marcus had shifted. Maybe it was the third glass of wine, or maybe it was just exhaustion from pretending.
"Actually," Sarah said softly, finally looking up from her plate, "that's not true. Pyramids collapse."
She touched her husband's hand. His bullish posture softened.
"Sometimes," Sarah continued, "you have to let it fall so you can build something solid."
Marcus looked at his wife. Really looked at her—for the first time in months, maybe years. Beneath the ambition, the carefully curated presentations, the relentless climbing, she looked tired.
He ate his spinach. It was cold, but fresh somehow. Real.
"I'll help you look at those positions," Marcus told Thomas. "Real ones. Conservative ones."
Elena's mask cracked. For a moment, just a moment, she looked relieved.
The pyramid sat in the center of the table—uncharted territory, unspoken truths, and the terrifying possibility that something new might actually grow.
