The Pyramid on Court Three

The glass walls of court three fogged with my breath as I smashed the padel ball into the corner. Marcus didn't even lunge.

'You're playing like a bear in hibernation,' he called from the baseline, sweat darkening his collar. 'Hibernation mode activated.'

I glared at him. This was his idea—Sunday morning matches to 'reconnect' after the Pyramid incident. The multilevel marketing scheme he'd poured fifty grand into, the one I'd begged him to avoid, had collapsed last week. Pyramid. The word still tasted like ash.

'Your serve,' I said.

He sauntered to the line, bull-like confidence undiminished. That was Marcus—charging through china shops of his own making. The padel racket felt foreign in my grip, unfamiliar. We'd taken up the sport because his upline swore it was where the real networking happened. Turned out, the only thing we networked ourselves into was bankruptcy.

'I heard from Jennifer,' Marcus said, tossing the ball up, eyes on me instead of the court. 'She says the new blockchain venture is solid.'

The ball hit the net.

'We're not doing this again.' I walked to the bench, grabbed my towel. 'I can't. I won't.'

Marcus followed, dropping his voice. 'It's different this time. She showed me the—'

'The matrix?' I laughed, bitter and sharp. 'The compensation plan? The payout structure?' I turned to face him. 'You want to know what a real pyramid looks like? Look at our marriage, Marcus. Everything you built—every promise, every plan—it's all resting on my income now. You're the top tier, and I'm carrying everyone else.'

Silence stretched between us, longer than the court.

'I thought you liked playing,' he said quietly.

'I love playing. I just hate losing.'

The bull and bear markets of our relationship had finally crashed. Some schemes, I realized, you can't bounce back from.
