The Pyramid of Years

Margaret sat in her favorite armchair, the morning sun warming her arthritis-stiffened hands. Snowball, her white cat of sixteen years, purred in her lap, his rhythmic vibrations like a small, steady heartbeat against her frail frame. At eighty-two, she'd learned that some of the best company came in quiet, furry packages.

On the side table sat the wooden pyramid her father had crafted in his workshop—a triangular box with secret compartments, built when she was just a girl. He'd told her it represented the layers of a life well-lived: the foundation sturdy, the peak pointing toward dreams.

Her palm, mapped with deepening creases and sun spots, rested on the smooth oak surface. She remembered how her mother used to read palms at church gatherings, always insisting she could see the future but refusing to reveal what she saw. "The good Lord keeps some secrets," she'd say with a wink.

Margaret opened the pyramid's bottom drawer and retrieved the small velvet pouch inside. Her fingers trembled slightly as she loosened the drawstring and poured the contents onto her palm: a lock of chestnut hair from Robert's first haircut, saved from 1958. Fifty-eight years of marriage, and she still kept this piece of him, though the man himself had been gone four years now.

"Your hair was chestnut then too," she whispered to Snowball, stroking his soft fur. The cat blinked his amber eyes sagely, as if he understood the weight of years.

She thought of her granddaughter, Emma, who'd visited yesterday with her own baby—Margaret's great-grandson. The cycle continued, each generation building upon the last like her father's pyramid. The foundation remained steady: love, persistence, faith.

Margaret replaced the lock of hair carefully, closed the drawer, and patted the pyramid's peak. Perhaps Emma would inherit it someday, along with the stories it held. For now, Margaret would keep these treasures safe, one more thread in the tapestry of a life that, like the pyramid's many sides, revealed something precious from every angle.
