The Pyramid of Unanswered Questions

Elena's hair had started thinning at forty-two, each fallen strand a tiny betrayal in the shower drain. She found herself running—literally, at 5 AM through predawn streets, and metaphorically, from the hollow certainty that she'd somehow arrived at the wrong life.

That's when she met Sphinx at the wellness expo. Not her real name, obviously. Sphinx was everything Elena wasn't: luminous, confident, selling those vitamin supplements that promised to reverse time itself.

"You look like someone who's asking the right questions," Sphinx had said, her fingers brushing Elena's arm. "But finding the wrong answers."

The affair began two weeks later. In Sphinx's pristine downtown apartment, Elena learned to stop asking and start feeling. She learned that desire could be its own form of nourishment, that the body could remember pleasure it had never known.

But then came the pyramid presentation. The PowerPoint slides, the tiered commission structure, the recruitment pitch. Sphinx wasn't just a lover; she was a sponsor, and Elena was her next recruit.

"This is how we build freedom," Sphinx said, eyes bright with something that looked like revelation. "Together."

Elena stood at the edge of the hotel conference room, watching the roomful of dreamers scribbling figures in notebooks. She saw it then: the geometry of hope, the way we build structures upward from nothing but faith and desperation. We're all selling something. She was just deciding whether she wanted to buy.

She walked out into the cold morning air, her fingers touching the vitamin bottle in her pocket, and kept running until the sun came up, not toward or away from anything anymore—just moving, finally, into the clarity of her own uncertain making.
