The Pyramid of Storm Dreams
Leo loved thunderstorms. While other kids hid under blankets, he pressed his nose against the window, watching the sky crackle with magic.
One evening, something amazing happened. A bolt of lightning struck his backyard, and when the flash faded, Leo saw something glowing—a crystal pyramid no bigger than his shoe, pulsing with soft blue light.
Heart pounding, Leo rushed outside in the rain. The pyramid hummed against his palm, and suddenly he wasn't in his backyard anymore. He was standing at the base of a massive pyramid made entirely of clouds, stretching up into a violet sky.
"Help us!" cried a voice like wind chimes.
Leo looked down to see small star-creatures, each one a tiny person made of sparkling light. They were running in panic as storm clouds gathered overhead.
"The Storm King wants to steal our dreams!" explained the bravest star-creature, whose name was Twinkle. "Only someone brave can save us!"
Leo grabbed Twinkle's hand. "What do I do?"
"Follow me!"
They started running up the pyramid's sides, which were firm beneath their feet like solidified rainbows. Higher and higher they climbed, while Storm King's servants—dark swirling shadows—chased after them.
"Faster!" Twinkle cried as lightning cracked across the purple sky.
But Leo's foot slipped, and he tumbled toward the edge of the cloud-pyramid. He grabbed a protruding cloud just in time, dangling over empty air.
The star-creatures formed a chain, holding onto each other. "We've got you!" they chorused.
Leo pulled himself up, breathless. "Thank you!"
"Not done yet," Twinkle said gravely. "Look."
At the pyramid's peak floated a pool of swirling silver liquid—the Dream Well. But the Storm King was approaching, a massive figure of dark clouds and crackling energy.
"Someone must go swimming in the Dream Well," Twinkle explained, "to activate its magic and send the Storm King away!"
Leo nodded. He'd always been good at swimming at the community pool.
He took a deep breath and dove into the silver liquid. It felt like diving into liquid starlight—cool and tingling, filled with whispers of happy dreams. The Dream Well glowed brighter, spinning like a galaxy, and suddenly Leo understood something wonderful.
The Storm King wasn't evil. He was lonely. The lightning crackled because he had no one to share his storms with.
"Come play!" Leo called, surfacing with starlight dripping from his hair. "The star-creatures love storms! They want to dance in your rain!"
The Storm King paused, his dark clouds softening. "Really?"
Twinkle and the other star-creatures nodded eagerly. "Show us your best lightning!"
The Storm King's crackling energy turned from angry to excited. He created dazzling lightning shows while the star-creatures danced through the rain, catching light on their sparkle-bodies.
Leo surfaced from the Dream Well one last time, the magic fading as the cloud-pyramid transformed back into his backyard. The tiny crystal pyramid sat in the grass, now warm and peaceful.
Inside his pocket, Twinkle's voice whispered, "Thank you, Leo. Whenever storms come, remember—lightning isn't scary. It's just the sky saying hello."
That night, Leo fell asleep to the sound of thunder, smiling. He'd made the sky less lonely, and discovered that sometimes the scariest things just need a friend.
