The Pyramid of Silent Regrets

Elena ran her fingers through the silver strands of hair that had conquered the brunette she'd spent forty years cultivating. The bathroom mirror reflected not just aging, but the slow accumulation of choices she couldn't unmake. Another corporate restructuring memo had landed in her inbox—her department, her team, her life's work reduced to a line item in someone's efficiency spreadsheet.

"You're being a bull about this," David had said last night, not unkindly, from his side of the bed they no longer shared. "They're offering a package. Take it."

But it wasn't about money anymore. Their calico cat, Bast, wound around her ankles, purring with the maddening assurance of a creature who'd already used up eight of her lives. Elena had adopted Bast the year she made vice president—a reward to herself for climbing the pyramid. Now she stood at its apex, looking down at the ruins of everything she'd sacrificed to get there.

The presentation was scheduled for noon. Her successor—a woman half her age with impeccable hair and terrifying ambition—would demonstrate how Elena's division could be "streamlined." The corporate euphemisms blurred together: synergies, rightsizing, leveraging core competencies. What they meant was: we don't need you anymore.

She thought about her mother, who'd died asking if Elena had finally found someone. She thought about David, sleeping beside her but miles away, their marriage collateral damage in her war against irrelevance.

At 11:47, Elena walked past the conference room. She could hear them inside—her team, her successor, the inevitable march of progress. Bast waited by the door when she returned home that evening. Elena scooped her up, buried her face in soft fur, and finally wept for the woman she'd been, the life she'd chosen, and the terrible, quiet realization that some pyramids were built to be tombs.
