The Pyramid of Silent Hours

Elena caught her reflection in the office window at 2 AM—face pale, eyes hollow, moving through the fluorescent-lit corridor like something that had forgotten how to be alive. A corporate zombie, she thought, not for the first time. Three years of七十-hour weeks had carved away the parts of her that used to write poetry, call her mother, feel anything but exhaustion and numb resignation.

Her phone buzzed with a photo from David—her ex—standing atop a real pyramid in Egypt, grinning with the woman he'd left her for. The caption read: "Finally ascending."

She deleted it. David had always spoken in metaphors about climbing together, reaching new heights, while she worked two jobs to fund his MBA. Now he was literally climbing pyramids with someone else, and she was assembling PowerPoint presentations about synergy and market penetration for clients who would fire their entire staffs to save three percent.

At home, Barnaby—her tabby cat—sat by the door, his yellow eyes judging her. He was the only living thing that still saw her clearly. When she collapsed onto the sofa, he padded over and head-butted her hand, purring like a small engine demanding maintenance. "You're the only one who notices I'm gone," she whispered into his fur, and the lump in her throat finally broke.

She hadn't cried since David left six months ago. Hadn't felt much of anything except the grind.

Barnaby's insistent purring vibrated through her chest. Somewhere in his animal consciousness, he understood that she had become a zombie—moving, working, existing, but not truly alive. He was demanding her return.

Elena stood up and walked to her laptop. The corporate pyramid scheme presentation glowed on her screen—hours of work for a client who wouldn't remember her name next week. She closed it without saving.

"I'm done building other people's pyramids," she said to the empty room. Barnaby meowed, as if in approval, and followed her to the bedroom. For the first time in months, she would sleep until her body decided to wake up. The zombie was finally coming back to life.
