The Pyramid of Silence

Marcus stood alone on his penthouse balcony, the sunset painting the sky in bruising shades of orange that reminded him of their last night together. Below, the city's lights flickered on like tiny, desperate prayers. His palm still tingled with the ghost of her touch—how she'd pressed it against his cheek in that hotel room in Cairo, just outside the shadow of the Great Pyramid.

"You're such a bull in a china shop," she'd whispered then, half-amused, half-exhausted by his relentless pursuit of success at all costs. "Some things aren't worth the wreckage."

He hadn't listened. Marcus never listened. He'd bulldozed through their relationship like he did through negotiations, through rival executives, through anyone standing between him and the next tier of the corporate pyramid he'd been climbing for two decades.

Now she was gone—left him for someone who actually knew how to be vulnerable, someone who didn't treat intimacy like a hostile takeover. The irony was brutal: he'd finally secured the corner office, the stock options, the admiring nods at conferences. But the pyramid of his ambition turned out to be a tomb after all.

His phone buzzed against the balcony railing—her sister, probably calling to tell him Elena was getting married. Marcus let it ring out, watching the last of the orange light surrender to darkness. He gripped the railing until his knuckles whitened, wondering if he'd ever learn that some victories cost more than defeat.

Inside, the empty condo waited with its pristine surfaces and perfect view, a monument to everything he'd sacrificed. Marcus turned away from the city and closed the sliding door, sealing himself inside the pyramid he'd built, stone by stone, choice by choice, until there was no way out.
