The Pyramid of Shining Screens
Lily pressed her face against the bakery window, watching her friend Maya inside. Maya's family had just moved away, and Lily missed her more than anything. That's when she noticed the old man at the corner table, waving her over.
"I have something special," he whispered, sliding something across the table. It was an old iPhone, its screen cracked but glowing with mysterious purple light. "This phone doesn't call people. It calls memories."
Lily's dog Barnaby, who had been waiting patiently outside, suddenly perked up his ears and let out a happy bark. He seemed to sense something magical was about to happen.
The old man instructed Lily to hold the phone in her palm and think of her friend. She closed her eyes tight, imagining Maya's laugh and the way she always shared her cookies at recess. When she opened them, the phone showed a tiny, glowing pyramid spinning on its screen.
"Touch it," the old man said.
Lily reached out, and suddenly she wasn't in the bakery anymore. She stood in a golden pyramid made entirely of light. Inside were hundreds of glowing screens, each showing a different memory of her and Maya—building sandcastles, learning to ride bikes, sharing secrets at sleepovers.
Barnaby appeared beside her, his tail wagging excitedly. Together, they walked through the pyramid of memories. Lily realized something important: friendship isn't about being close. It's about carrying someone's heart with you, no matter how far away they are.
When Lily opened her eyes, she was back at the bakery. The old man was gone, but the iPhone remained in her hand. That night, Lily called Maya on a regular phone. They talked for hours, and Lily knew their friendship was stronger than any distance.
Sometimes, she still opens that magical iPhone and visits her pyramid of memories, reminding herself that the best friends are never truly gone—they live on in every moment you've shared together.
