The Pyramid of My Existence

Maya pressed her forehead against the cool glass of her bedroom window, watching the orange sunset bleed across the suburban skyline like a bruised peach. Her mom's voice drifted up from downstairs—something about "transformational wellness"—and Maya groaned inwardly. The wellness pyramid scheme had arrived.

Three days ago, her mom had bought into It. Now their living room housed a pyramid-shaped display of "crystal-energized" supplements that cost more than Maya's entire wardrobe.

"Maya! Come meet the team!" her mom called.

Maya dragged herself downstairs. There, bouncing on their scratched leather sofa, was the cutest boy from her AP Bio class. Liam. Liam with the amber eyes and the effortless swoop of hair that defied gravity.

"This is my daughter, the future microbiologist," her mom announced, gesturing like Vanna White at a new car.

Liam's dog, a chaos tornado named Pickles, was currently attempting to befriend their ancient cat, Miso. Miso, having survived three moves, two toddlers, and a vacuum cleaner incident, was not impressed.

"So," Liam said, sliding off the sofa. "Your mom really bought into the whole—"

"Pyramid scheme?" Maya finished, simultaneously dying of mortification and kind of loving that they were sharing this moment. "Yeah. She's at the 'financial freedom' stage. Next comes the 'recruit your friends' stage."

Liam laughed, and Maya felt something flutter in her chest that wasn't anxiety for once. His phone pinged.

"My goldfish," he said. "I mean, my little sister. She's got this performance tonight and I promised I'd FaceTime her." He looked at Maya. "You coming? There's free snacks."

The pyramid loomed behind them like a neon testament to parental embarrassment. But somewhere in its crystal-energized shadow, something clicked.

"Sure," Maya said, reaching for her shoes. "But I'm never buying supplements."

"Deal," Liam said. "Also, Miso just blinked at Pickles. I think that's progress."

Maya's phone buzzed—a text from her mom: "He seems nice! ;-)"

Maya rolled her eyes, but as they walked out into the cooling evening air, she found herself smiling. Sometimes the most embarrassing things could lead to something unexpected.

Like freedom. Or like a boy who let your cat judge his dog in peace.
