The Pyramid of Memories

Margaret sat in her favorite armchair, her tabby cat Oliver curled peacefully on her lap. At eighty-two, she'd learned that the quiet moments often held the most meaning.

Her granddaughter Emma burst through the door with a cardboard pyramid she'd built for school. "Grandma, will you help me with my family history project?"

Margaret smiled, smoothing Emma's hair. "Of course, darling." They spent the afternoon arranging old photographs inside the pyramid-shaped structure—her wedding day, her late husband Arthur holding baby Margaret, the house they built together.

"You seem sad, Grandma," Emma said softly.

Margaret sighed. "For a while after your grandfather passed, I felt like a zombie, just moving through the motions of each day. But then I realized—that's not how Arthur would want me to live."

Oliver stirred, purring loudly as Margaret continued, "Life has seasons, Emma. The pyramid your great-grandfather built still stands in Egypt after thousands of years. Love is like that—it endures."

Emma's eyes widened. "Is that why you still make Grandpa's cinnamon bread on Sundays?"

Margaret nodded. "Traditions are how we keep our loved ones present. Every bite tastes like his hug."

The cat stretched and jumped down, heading toward the kitchen. Margaret laughed, a warm, rich sound. "Oliver knows it's nearly tea time. Some things never change."

That evening, as Emma carefully added her own photo to the family pyramid, Margaret felt Arthur's presence as strongly as if he sat beside her. Some loves, like pyramids, withstand time itself—and like Oliver's steady companionship, they remind us that joy always returns if we have the courage to welcome it back home.
