The Pyramid of Lies

The orange cable lay coiled on her desk like a sleeping snake—the ethernet line that shouldn't have been there. Elena ran her fingers along its plastic sheath, wondering how her supposedly trusted colleague had managed to install a tap on the network without anyone noticing.

Three months ago, Marcus had brought his golden retriever, Buster, to the office. Everyone had laughed when the dog had knocked over a stack of files. But Elena had noticed something else—how Buster always seemed to bark whenever Marcus stepped away from his computer.

She'd dismissed it as coincidence until the pyramid scheme began to unravel. Not the illegal kind, but the corporate structure: Marcus at the apex, his subordinates beneath him, all feeding information up the chain. Only the information wasn't going to the company. It was flowing somewhere else.

"Coffee?" Marcus appeared in her doorway, Buster at his heels.

Elena's pulse accelerated. She was almost certain now—Marcus was a spy, selling their research to competitors. The orange cable was physical proof of his data siphoning operation. But she needed more.

"Actually," she said, forcing a smile, "I wanted to ask about Buster. Does he always bark when you leave your desk?"

Marcus froze. Just for a second. "Trained him to do that. Security measure."

Elena nodded slowly. "Makes sense. Security is everything these days."

That night, she followed the orange cable through the ceiling tiles, traced it to a hidden transmitter, documented everything. When corporate security arrested Marcus three days later, it was Buster who gave him away—wailing inconsolably as his owner was led away in handcuffs.

Some secrets, Elena learned, hide in plain sight. And sometimes, the most revealing truths come not from sophisticated surveillance, but from a dog who knew too much and a cable that shouldn't have been orange.
