The Pyramid of Friendly Spies
Lily loved spy stories. Every day after school, she would creep around her backyard with homemade binoculars—two toilet paper tubes taped together—on important secret missions.
One afternoon, while spying on the squirrels burying acorns, Lily noticed something strange shimmering behind the old oak tree. She pushed through the bushes and gasped. There, hidden in her very own backyard, stood a tiny pyramid made of glowing golden crystals. It was only as tall as her knee, but it sparkled like captured sunshine.
"What are you doing?" a voice squeaked.
Lily jumped! Standing beside her was the oddest creature she'd ever seen. It looked like a zombie from her storybooks—pale green skin, messy hair sticking straight up like he'd been electrocuted—but instead of groaning "brains," he was adjusting tiny spectacles and holding a clipboard.
"I'm Zimby," the little zombie said, smiling to reveal missing teeth. "And you're standing on the Great Pyramid of Wishes!"
"Zombies are supposed to be scary," Lily said, lowering her cardboard binoculars.
"That's just what people say!" Zimby tapped his chin. "I'm actually a friendly spy for the Department of Dreams. I guard wishes that children forget to make."
Lily's eyes widened. "Really?"
"Really!" Zimby's crazy hair bobbed as he nodded. "But I have a problem. I've been running all day trying to catch the Wisp of Wonder before sunset, and I'm not fast enough. Will you help me?"
Lily grinned. This was better than any spy game! "I'm the fastest runner in my class!"
Together, the girl with messy pigtails and the little zombie with electrocuted hair went running through the magical pyramid's entrance into a world of swirling colors. They chased the Wisp—a glowing butterfly made of pure light—through meadows made of candy floss and over rivers of sparkling lemonade.
When they finally caught the Wisp, Zimby explained something wonderful: "See, Lily? The best adventures aren't the ones we spy on from far away. They're the ones we share with friends, even unexpected ones."
That night, Lily wrote in her diary: The best spy is one who finds magic in the most surprising places. And sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures make the best friends.
The tiny pyramid still glows in her backyard. On nights when the moon is full, if you look very carefully, you might see Lily and Zimby, still running after dreams together, collecting wishes and guarding them for every child who remembers to look for magic in unexpected places.
