The Pyramid of Floating Papayas

Barnaby was no ordinary bear. While other bears spent their days catching salmon, Barnaby spent his days catching dreams.

Every morning, he climbed to the top of Misty Mountain where a magical spring bubbled with the clearest water anyone had ever seen. The water was so pure that if you looked closely, you could see tiny fish made of rainbows swimming inside.

But the most magical thing happened when the first papaya of the season rolled down the mountain. Instead of smashing on the rocks, the papaya would float—perfectly balanced—on the surface of the water.

Barnaby had a collection. Twenty-seven floating papayas, arranged in a shimmering pyramid that rose from the spring. At sunset, the pyramid glowed golden, and Barnaby would sit beside it, making up stories about each papaya's journey.

One day, a young girl named Lily stumbled upon the spring. She was lost, her iphone's battery dead, her pockets full of worry. When she saw Barnaby and his glowing papaya pyramid, she gasped.

"Is that real?" she whispered.

Barnaby nodded slowly. "Each papaya holds a wish," he rumbled softly. "The water remembers them."

Lily's eyes widened. "Can I make a wish?"

"The pyramid chooses who needs it most," Barnaby said.

That night, under a sky full of stars, the papaya pyramid began to hum. One by one, the papayas floated into the air, swirling around Lily like golden fireflies. Then they burst into a shower of light that filled her iphone with just enough power for one call home.

"Thank you," Lily hugged Barnaby's fuzzy neck. "I'll never forget this."

Barnaby watched her go, smiling. His papaya pyramid was gone, but somehow, the water seemed even brighter than before.

Sometimes, the best wishes are the ones we give away.
