The Pyramid of Empty Wins

Marcus stared at the corporate pyramid chart on the conference room wall, its jagged hierarchy mocking his twenty years of climbing rungs that led nowhere. At 47, he was the Senior VP of Nothing That Mattered.

The bull market had roared for a decade, but Marcus had forgotten how to enjoy the ride. His ex-wife's words echoed: 'You're always chasing something, Marc, but you never stop to feel it.'

'You still with us?' Chen's voice cut through. The startup founders were pitching something about AI-driven baseball analytics. Marcus blinked.

'Sorry. Go on.'

Marcus thought about his father's baseball glove, buried somewhere in a closet. The old man had taught him to catch, to bear down, to keep his eye on the ball. 'Life's a curveball, son. You gotta swing at what matters.'

His father had been dead five years. Marcus hadn't swung at anything real since.

The founder kept talking. 'Our algorithm predicts player performance with 94% accuracy. It's a bear of a system, but the returns—'

A bear. Marcus almost laughed. Last week, he'd dropped his daughter at college and watched her walk away, carrying herself like someone ready to face bears and bull markets alike. 'You should come visit, Dad,' she'd said, already distant.

'What are you thinking?' Chen asked afterward.

'That I don't want to invest in more ways to measure winning,' Marcus said, surprised by his own voice. 'I think I'm done with pyramids.'

'You're quitting?'

'Yeah. I'm gonna go see my daughter. Maybe find my old glove.'

Chen stared. 'It's the bull market, Marcus. You walk away now—'

'I know.' Marcus stood up. 'But I've got one more season in me.'

He walked out, leaving behind the pyramid, the bull, the bear, and every empty win he'd ever chased. Finally, he was going to play the game.
