The Pyramid of Empty Things

Marcus stood at the edge of the padel court, sweat pooling in his palms, watching the ball bounce against the glass walls. Another networking session disguised as recreation. His business partner, Elena, had invited him here—to this pyramid-shaped resort in Dubai—where deals were struck between serves and volleys.

"You're playing like shit," she said, slamming the ball past him. "Distracted?"

"Just thinking about the merger."

"Always the merger." She laughed, but it didn't reach her eyes. "You know, there's a woman here. Reads palms. Says she can tell you where you're really headed. Not where you think you're going."

Marcus snorted. "I know exactly where I'm going. Top of the pyramid."

"Are you?" Elena stepped closer, her racket dangling at her side. "Or are you just climbing someone else's pyramid?"

Later that night, drunk on expensive scotch and his own perceived success, Marcus let the old woman take his hand. She traced the lines with gnarled fingers, pausing at his life line.

"You've built something," she said, voice like crushed velvet. "But it's not yours."

"What does that mean?"

"You've been climbing so long you forgot what you were climbing toward." She pressed a coin into his palm. "Go back to the beginning. Remember why you started."

He found himself at the padel court at dawn, Elena already there, hitting balls against the wall. She stopped when she saw him.

"Well?" she asked.

Marcus opened his hand. The coin glinted in the sunrise. "I don't want the merger. I don't want the pyramid."

"Then what?"

"I want to start something that's actually mine. With you."

Elena smiled, and for the first time in three years, it reached her eyes. "Finally," she said, tossing him a racket. "Your serve."
