The Pyramid of Empty Promises

Mara stood on her balcony, the Miami humidity pressing against her skin like a forgotten promise. In the distance, **lightning** fractured the sky — electric veins spiderwebbing through clouds that refused to rain. She held her **iPhone** in the darkness, the screen illuminating her face with pale blue light as she refreshed her email for the third time in five minutes. Still nothing.

Inside, the corporate retreat continued without her. Tomorrow, they'd all sit in a conference room shaped like a **pyramid**, some architectural metaphor for hierarchy and ascendancy that the CEO had paid too much for. Her boss, Richard, would present the quarterly projections with the swagger of a **bull** in a china shop, destroying everything but never acknowledging the damage.

She looked at her **palm**, tracing the life line that seemed shorter than it had a year ago. Palm reading was nonsense, her mother had said, but at 45, staring down the barrel of another restructuring round, Mara found herself desperate for any system that offered prediction.

"You coming back in?" Richard's voice from the sliding door. He held two champagne flutes, his tie undone, that predatory confidence masking everything he'd never apologize for.

"Just getting some air," she said, not turning around.

"Good presentation tomorrow," he said, setting a glass on the rail. "Don't forget — we're all ascending together."

The **lightning** flashed again, closer this time. She watched him retreat through the glass, already moving toward someone else, anyone who still believed the **pyramid** led somewhere worth going.

Mara dropped her phone into her bag. Tomorrow she'd request that transfer to the Montana office. She'd take the pay cut. She'd learn to sleep through quiet nights instead of this electric waiting, this manufactured urgency, this corporate ascension that felt less like climbing and more like falling in slow motion.

The storm finally broke. Rain washed over her **palm**, washing nothing away at all.
