The Pyramid of Empty Promises

Maya stared at the amber bottle of vitamin D supplements on her desk—her daily dose of corporate survival. The office building rose around her like a glass pyramid, each level housing increasingly expensive suits who made decisions about lives they'd never touch. At thirty-five, she'd mastered the art of looking productive while contemplating the various ways she'd sell her soul for enough money to disappear.

The water cooler had become her sanctuary. That's where Jake found her, three months ago, with eyes that held just enough desperation to seem genuine, just enough charm to be dangerous. He'd pitched his multilevel marketing scheme between sips of lukewarm water, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper as he outlined the vitamin supplements that would allegedly make them both wealthy beyond measure.

"It's not about the product," he'd said, leaning too close. "It's about the people. The network. The community."

Now, Maya watched from the break room as Jake recruited another junior analyst, the same predatory gleam in his eyes. The pyramid grew—each new recruit another foundation stone for someone else's castle. She'd swallowed his vitamin pitch, his promises of freedom, his temporary intimacy in the supply closet. Now she understood that she was both predator and prey, another rung on the ladder, another body keeping the pyramid aloft.

Her phone buzzed—another team meeting in the glass-walled conference room, another round of reassurances that their vitamin startup was about to breakthrough, just one more recruitment away from solvency. Jake caught her eye across the room and offered that practiced smile, the one that crinkled the corners but never reached his eyes.

Maya opened her vitamin bottle and poured the pills into her palm—tiny, useless promises in gelatin capsules. She dropped them into the water glass, watching them dissolve into nothing, leaving only cloudy remnants of what they'd claimed to be. The building outside shimmered in the afternoon sun, a monument to human ambition built on foundations of sand, water, and the eternal hope that this time, the pyramid wouldn't collapse.
