The Pyramid in the Backyard
Lily was playing in her backyard when she noticed something strange. Behind the old oak tree, where there had always been just grass, now stood a golden pyramid. It shimmered in the sunlight like a captured sunbeam.
Her cat Mochi, a fluffy black cat with bright green eyes, trotted toward the pyramid and meowed loudly. Then Mochi did something impossible — she spoke! "Lily, come inside! The magic won't wait forever!"
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"Only inside the pyramid," Mochi explained. "I'm its guardian. Come quickly!"
Together they stepped through a doorway that appeared in the pyramid's side. Inside was a chamber filled with warm golden light. In the center grew a single palm tree, its trunk glowing with silver light. Beneath it sat a pool of crystal blue water that seemed to sparkle from within.
"This is the Wishing Pool," Mochi said. "You may make one wish. But be careful — the water only grants wishes that help others."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for toys, or candy, or to fly. But then she remembered her friend Timmy, who couldn't run and play like other kids because he was in a wheelchair.
"I wish Timmy could run and dance and play tag with us," Lily said softly.
The water began to glow. A single droplet rose into the air and floated out the door. The palm tree's leaves rustled, though there was no wind.
"Your wish has been granted," Mochi purred. "You chose wisely, Lily. The greatest magic lives in kindness."
The next day at school, Timmy's wheelchair sat empty. He ran across the playground, laughing, playing tag, his face full of joy. Lily watched from the swings, smiling.
That night, the pyramid was gone. But in its place grew a small palm tree, its leaves shimmering silver in the moonlight. Mochi the cat curled up beside it, and Lily knew that magic was real — and the best kind of magic was the kind you shared with others.
