The Pyramid in My Backpack

The pyramid scheme wasn't even mine. It was my brother's—some "revolutionary" skincare MLM that had consumed his entire personality and half our garage. But when Tyler asked about the mysterious boxes in my backpack during third period, I panicked.

"It's... uh... for my skin," I mumbled, instantly regretting everything. Tyler, with his perfect complexion and effortless popularity, raised an eyebrow.

"Cool," he said, but I could hear the question mark in his voice.

The water bottle incident happened two days later. I was already carrying the weight of my brother's failed dreams and my own social suicide when I tripped in the cafeteria. The bottle exploded, sending an arc of water across three tables—including Taylor's lunch. Taylor, who I'd been lowkey crushing on since September, who now had a soaking wet turkey sandwich and a very unfortunate wet spot on her jeans.

Everyone stared. I wanted to bear it—just own the moment, laugh it off—but instead I grabbed my backpack and fled. The pyramid boxes clanked against each other like a chorus of judgment.

I found myself behind the school, near the old creek where nobody went. That's where Taylor found me twenty minutes later.

"You okay?" she asked.

I expected mockery. Instead, she sat beside me on the grass. "My brother got sucked into one of those pyramid things last year," she said, nodding at my backpack. "Lost five hundred dollars and gained fifty bottles of supposed miracle face wash."

We talked for an hour. About brothers who made bad choices, about high school feeling like one giant pyramid scheme where you invested everything for barely any return, about how sometimes you just wanted to bear hug yourself and disappear.

"Want to get water with me tomorrow?" Taylor asked as the bell rang. "Like, as a... date?"

The pyramid boxes in my backpack didn't feel so heavy anymore. Sometimes the worst accidents lead to the best destinations.
