The Pyramid in Left Field
Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every Saturday, she played with her team, the Sunflowers, in the dusty field behind her school. But Lily had a secret—she was afraid of the ball. When it came flying toward her, she closed her eyes.
One evening, when everyone else had gone home, Lily noticed something strange in left field. A golden shimmer was rising from the dirt. Curious, she crept closer.
It was a tiny pyramid, no bigger than her shoe, glowing with soft orange light. As she reached for it, a voice squeaked, "Not so fast!"
Lily jumped. A small goldfish was swimming through the air beside her! "I'm Finley," the fish said, flipping his tail. "That pyramid belongs to the Magic of Courage. Only the bravest can open it."
Lily's heart sank. "I'm not brave," she whispered. "I'm afraid of baseballs."
Finley swam closer. "Being brave doesn't mean not being afraid. It means doing what scares you because you know it matters."
The pyramid pulsed brighter. Lily thought about her team, how they always encouraged her even when she ducked away from the ball. She thought about how much she wanted to be brave for them.
"I'll try," Lily said, her voice shaking.
She placed her hands on the pyramid. Warmth flooded through her. Inside, she saw images of herself—catching flies, hitting home runs, smiling while her teammates cheered.
The pyramid opened. Inside wasn't gold or jewels. It was a single, glowing baseball.
"This is the Ball of Courage," Finley explained. "Whenever you hold it, you'll remember that being brave is like baseball—sometimes you swing and miss, but you keep stepping up to the plate."
The pyramid dissolved into sparkles, and the baseball appeared in Lily's hand. When she looked up, Finley was gone.
The next Saturday, when a hard line drive shot toward left field, Lily didn't close her eyes. She planted her feet, reached up, and caught it. Her team cheered louder than ever.
That night, Lily kept the glowing baseball on her nightstand. It reminded her that courage isn't about not being scared—it's about being scared and doing something brave anyway.
